Thanks. I knew that was a Convair 240, but I had no idea about the car.

would definitely dd one of those landyachts.... i mean it would probably drink my weeks wages in fuel on my 3 mile commute and i’d only be able to park in truckstops

Nice to see that pilot going to AA and getting the help he needs.

I tried to figure out if I could tell whether it was an Invicta or a LeSabre
model from behind, but it turns out I was looking at the wrong thing. The rocker panel trim, as it turns out, is unique to the Electra models, and the only Electra offered in a convertible was the Electra 225. The one with the Convair is an *extremely* expensive car.

What Electra means to me:
That is a sexy Buick, though.

Electra tends to mean this to me:
...because of Earhart and not following some periods of commercial flight as closely as their military counterparts.
If I might suggest, the sexiness of the Buick is high enough to suggest the Model
10 rather than the L-
188.

Agreed. It's just that I was writing about the P-3 Orion recently, so I've got the big Electra on my mind

401 Buick Nailhead, 225" long car - “Automobile catalog” has an estimating calculator on their specs page for a ‘59 Invicta two-door hardtop (very similar) with 401 that says <9.9mpg US, somewhere around 24l/100km. Likely worse in real life.
I’m currently DDing something with a 289 and 210" long that gets about 14mpg, and with about a 3 mile commute
. But - I am also not in Europe.

Just remember, when you fly drunk it’s because you’re sick. You need to remind flight crew not to bring you alcohol when you ask for it, because this is a process that means asking other people to help you.

Nothing but commutes - ~50km per week, 12l, = $24. A mere thousand+ dollars per year...
How would insurance and so on work out?

Somewhere along the way at Airventure, I saw an airplane with the rear luggage compartment stuffed to the top with paper towels and TP.

I found this picture also, which makes me wonder if that really is a 240 in the top picture and not an L-188 . If, as you say, that is a Buick Electra, it makes a lot more sense for the admen to pair the two.

Considering that that exact same year, Lincoln marketing was courting the endorsement of Donald Douglas and the head of OMC...

Lincoln ups the game with jets over props, but Buick makes a decidedly more attractive car.

It’s funny - the overall squared-off shape of the ‘60s was more accurately predicted by Lincoln, they pulled off more interior space and trunk space, higher performance, wide door openings, and a low sill to step in with an innovative unibody... and The General stole the canted headlights trick from the ‘58 in a way that made it a prettier twin in ‘59 for the Buick, and stole the tailfin and back quarters design for the ‘59 Pontiac.
Having your rivals rip you off and then spend the money to make your ideas better has got to be infuriating.
In trying to tone down the ‘50s excess, Lincoln misfired in removing too much “airplane”
, and then GM basically pantsed them.

Even knowing it’s a styling misfire, I like the ‘59 Lincoln. (Enough to buy Jarod Rose’s one). It’s got a bulky almost Soviet opulence to it.
Lincoln must have been doing something right, though - hot rodders repeatedly stole ‘58 headlight bodywork to add to things.
So much so there’s a trade nickname for this type of mod, including from other (less common) donors like a ‘61 Chrysler: “Canted quads”.

It doesn’t have the flaws in character of the ‘58 Lincoln’s front treatment, and captures its best part.
